The Care Economy Conundrum

Our Managing Director, Amir Isyam Abdul Rahim, wrote in The Star on a critical issue shaping Malaysia’s demographic and economic future: the care economy.

In the article, Amir highlights how Malaysia is ageing faster than our institutions are prepared for. With falling fertility rates, longer life expectancy, and weak social care systems, the burden of care is increasingly falling on families, particularly women, often at the cost of productivity, equity, and dignity.

He argues that care should not be treated solely as a welfare concern. A strong care economy is a productivity enabler, a labour-market engine, and a core pillar of national resilience in a shrinking workforce. Without decisive reform, Malaysia risks deepening inequality, caregiver burnout, and economic stagnation.

Amir outlines why urgent action is needed, from professionalising care work and strengthening retirement readiness to expanding affordable care services and aligning labour policies with demographic realities.
