The Evolving Malaysian Dilemma
On Saturday, 22 August 2026, our Managing Director, Amir Isyam Abdul Rahim, published his latest Policy & Profit column in The Star titled “The Evolving Malaysian Dilemma.”
As Malaysia approaches Merdeka, the article reflects on an enduring national challenge: How do we strengthen a shared Malaysian identity while recognising the different histories, experiences, and concerns of the communities that make up our nation?
Against the backdrop of demographic change, fiscal constraints, rising living costs, and growing global competition for talent and resources, Amir argues that scarcity can intensify identity politics. Rather than expecting these tensions to disappear, Malaysia must manage them constructively while building an economy that creates sufficient opportunities for all.
The article calls for existing policies to evolve with Malaysia’s changing realities, including addressing concerns over the delivery and effectiveness of Bumiputera policies while recognising the experiences of generations of non-Bumiputera Malaysians. Ultimately, the goal is to build a Malaysia where every citizen feels secure, valued, and proud of both their national identity and ethnic heritage.
