Women, the Economy’s Swiss Army Knife

Women today function as the “Swiss Army Knife” of the economy, balancing roles across the workforce, households, and caregiving systems. However, this multi-dimensional contribution remains undervalued and under-supported within current policy frameworks.
Malaysia’s female labour force participation continues to face structural constraints, including caregiving responsibilities, limited childcare access, and rigid workplace arrangements. These barriers not only affect women’s economic outcomes but also have broader implications for national productivity, household stability, and long-term demographic sustainability.
The article argues that policy must move beyond symbolic or fragmented measures. Instead, Malaysia needs a holistic approach that enables women to participate meaningfully and sustainably in the workforce. This includes expanding flexible work arrangements, strengthening childcare systems, and supporting career re-entry pathways.
As Malaysia navigates an ageing population and a shrinking workforce, empowering women is not simply a matter of equity. It is a strategic economic imperative.
